For many, the month of June means summer fun and no homework, but it’s also a critical time of need for blood donations.
Coffee Memorial Blood Center and Amarillo Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery are teaming up for a blood donation event from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Friday at the oral care center, 5051 S. Soncy Road. The blood center will also set up from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Ussery-Roan Veterans Home, 1020 Tascosa Road, and from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Texas Oncology, 1000 S. Coulter St.
Snacks will be provided and donors will receive a free T-shirt. Coffee Memorial will also give each donor a voucher for a free gallon of Plains Dairy milk and a pint of Blue Bell Ice Cream to mark National Dairy Month.
Eligible donors include residents of Potter and Randall counties and surrounding communities who are at least 17, or 16 with written parental consent. Donors must weigh at least 115 pounds.
Holidays, particularly Memorial Day, present a challenging time for the blood center, spokeswoman Suzanne Talley said, with extended travel and summer activities being factors.
“The patient that we had on Friday of last week … he went in crisis mode and used multiple, multiple units of the blood … so you never know when it’s going to be you,” she said.
The blood center takes donations at 4500 Wallace Blvd. Monday through Saturday.
