Wisdom Teeth Removal FAQs
What happens if you never get your wisdom teeth taken out?
It’s rare that wisdom teeth develop without causing any issues. Leaving wisdom teeth in the mouth can lead to complications, such as infections, cysts, and tumors.
Do wisdom teeth always hurt when they come in?
No. Some wisdom teeth develop without causing any pain. However, this does not mean that they are complication-free. Your dentist will monitor your wisdom teeth as they develop and can refer to an oral surgeon when it’s time for further treatment.
When should wisdom teeth be removed?
Wisdom teeth develop during the mid to late teen years, which is when many dental professionals recommend having them removed. Be sure to attend regular checkups with your dentist, because they take X-rays which track the development of wisdom teeth and will refer you to an oral surgeon when it’s time to have them removed.
Will I be asleep when I get my wisdom teeth removed?
Patients typically undergo general anesthesia during the wisdom tooth extraction procedure. This type of anesthesia allows you to sleep comfortably and wake up when the procedure is over. Patients do not experience any pain or discomfort while under general anesthesia, and we provide detailed instructions to guide you throughout your recovery.
Does everyone have wisdom teeth?
No, not everyone develops wisdom teeth. While most people develop four wisdom teeth, it is not uncommon for someone to only have one, two, or three wisdom teeth. In rare cases, some people may develop more than four wisdom teeth! Your dentist will monitor your wisdom teeth with X-rays during your regular check-ups.
How long is recovery?
You should rest for the remainder of the day following surgery. Many patients return to their normal routines within a few days.
