TMJ Disorders

Alleviate Facial Pain and Discomfort

The temporomandibular joint, or TMJ, holds the jaw onto the rest of the skull and allows the jaw to open and close smoothly. Sometimes, a TMJ disorder arises and causes pain, tightness, or popping, among other symptoms.

The following symptoms may be indications of a TMJ disorder:

  • Pain or discomfort around the jaw or in front of the ears
  • Popping or clicking sounds when using the jaw
  • Tightness or tension around the jaw
  • Ear pain or a sensation of ringing in the ears
  • Headaches
  • Dizziness
  • Difficulty eating food or opening the jaw wide

Causes For TMJ Disorders

TMJ disorders do not always have a clear cause, and occasionally more than one factor can contribute to a person developing a TMJ disorder. Sometimes knowing the cause of a TMJ disorder can make it easier to find a treatment. Common causes of TMJ disorders include:

  • Facial injuries
  • Excessive clenching of the jaw
  • Grinding the teeth or clenching at night
  • Arthritis

Treatment for TMJ Disorders

During your consultation appointment, we may take 3D CBCT scans to view the position of your jaws and get a clearer view of your jaw joint. If needed, we can discuss anesthesia and sedation options to ensure comfort during any procedure.

Some TMJ cases can be controlled by lifestyle changes, such as wearing a mouth guard. In other cases, oral surgeons can perform surgery to realign the jaws. If you are suffering from pain or are looking to alleviate discomfort in your jaw, the surgeons at Amarillo Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery & Dental Implants can design a treatment plant that’s right for you.
